FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: Do I need anything else to play the game or does it all come in the box?
A: All the needed parts to play the game come in the pocket-sized box, cards, dice, and rules printed on the inside of the unfolding box, even a miniature starship to track your position all included. You don’t need to buy anything else; you’ll just need space to place the cards, about a 12x18” area to play the game on a flat surface.
Q: How do I collect resources; can I just go back to get more?
A: You collect the resources gained when placing and moving onto that location, you must have placed 12 total locations before you can move backwards to any already placed locations (unless forced back by an event card). Only after placing 12 locations can you then recollect from prior locations.
Q: Does the starting location count as one of the 12 locations?
A: Yes, the starting location counts as one of the twelve locations minimum, the player puts 12 location cards total out into the play area for a game, eleven are ones you choose and place form your hand.
Q: How many location cards should the player have in hand?
A: After placing the starting location card, the player draws 3 location cards as their hand. Maintain this hand of 3 throughout gameplay, after placing a card and moving to it the player draws a new card to start the next turn and maintain the hand of 3. Some events may change player’s hand.
Q: What exactly is considered a full turn cycle?
A: A normal turn begins with the player reestablishing their hand (normally 3), then the player would roll the 2 D6 for that turns Fuel Points Roll while also drawing a new Event Card. Most event cards are effective from when they are drawn through to when the player moves, or attempts to move, to a new location. If the player cannot move during their turn- they only would draw a new location on the next turn if they, for some reason, did not have a full hand, and then they would draw a new event alongside with a new roll attempt for better Fuel Points.
Q: I haven’t drawn all the location cards and I’m at the end of my run?
A: You don’t need to draw all the location cards and most likely won’t during a normal game, you only need to visit a minimum of 12 locations and collect a total of 20 resources to win and there are 21 total locations so all may not be used. Play again to perhaps have different locations on your journey.
Q: I’ve drawn all the events?
A: Reshuffle the events and redraw from the newly shuffled deck, most attached events return at this point as well.
Q: Do I keep adding to my fuel points each turn?
A: No, the player rolls the two D6 at the start of each turn to determine their fuel points for that move and the two values are added together only at this time, they are used to move to a location and any remainder is simply lost with the next new roll for fuel. Fuel Points do not rollover between turns or accumulate like that.
Q: Do I have to lose the -value in the right triangle every time I move to that card?
A: No, the -value lost is only done when a player is stuck on that location, unable to place a card from their hand or make any move the player must yield that value only if no other move exists. Think of it like being in check in chess terminology. Pay the penalty of getting stuck on the location and then hope for a better Fuel Point roll that works better with the locations available in your hand.
Q: I got stuck on a location and lost all my resources?
A: That’s check-mate, getting stuck and losing all your resource points is a game over.
Q: How do I not get stuck on a location and quickly drain my resources?
A: Strategically plan your card placements based on the 3 options available in your hand, save cards with low crossing values for late in the game and place cards in a pattern to come back around near the starting location at the end for a quick finish.
Q: I don’t quite have enough time to play a full 30-60 minute game?
A: Starjourn’s rules were made to be flexible, try playing a shorter game like placing 8 locations and collecting only12-15 resources instead. Likewise, you could play a much harder and longer game by placing all location cards and collecting 40 resources, try turning the player card to denote a full 20+ state. Be creative with the rules to create new ways to play.
